Hard water hair damage
Have you ever noticed how a trip to another part of the country (particularly the South) or abroad leaves your hair looking and feeling different? It’s not your imagination: it’s probably down to hard water hair damage.
Hard water is water that contains a large amount of minerals, especially calcium and magnesium. Whilst it’s not harmful to your health, the accumulation of minerals contained in hard water can cause a drying effect for your skin and hair.
Mineral content in water can vary from place to place. In Honley, Huddersfield and West Yorkshire we have slightly hard to moderately hard water. For the science buffs amongst you that means there is between 100 and 200mg of calcium carbonate equivalent per litre of water. On the soft to hard scale, our region resides in the ‘medium’ category.
What does this mean for you hair?
The build-up of excess minerals found in hard water can mean bad news for your hair. The extra sediments can weigh-down hair leaving you with dull or even greasy looking hair. Hard water can also lead to a build up on the scalp, causing a dandruff-like condition to form.
Before products can do their job, you need to get the basics right; washing your hair in the correct water! Now we’re not suggesting you go to the extreme of relocating to a part of the country with a soft water supply. There are many things you can do in your current address to get those locks looking luscious again!
Here are our top tips on how to beat hard water hair:
Yes, these exist! Shower head water filters work just like drinking water filters by enhancing pH balance, filtering out unwanted chemicals and letting only the good stuff pass through. These filters are built into their own custom-made shower heads, so be prepared to replace your entire shower head. They vary in price depending on their various functions. Have a look online at the different types available.
Washing you hair with bottled water is no myth. A final rinse with bottled or filtered water will wash away all the sediments and minerals leaving you with fresh, soft, and super shiny hair. This is an expensive fix so you could consider rainwater….
Rainwater has the same effect as bottled water as it is naturally very low in minerals. If you wanted to be uber eco responsible you could consider collecting rainwater and recycling it on your hair. It’s not like we’re short of the stuff here in Honley is it?
Use a good cleansing shampoo
We recommend Bamboo Style Deep Cleansing Clarifying Shampoo. This will help eliminate all impurities, and is also good in helping to remove product build up.
Finish off with a good moisture range
We would recommend the Bamboo Smooth Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Bamboo Smooth Anti-Frizz Conditioner. These are enriched with KENDI Oil . The Bamboo Smooth KENDI Intense Moisture Masque is perfect for after shampooing. Leave on for 3-5 mins and it restores strands to a smooth and silky texture.
For styling products, the BAMBOO Smooth Kendi Oil Dry Oil Mist for fine hair and the Bamboo Smooth Kendi Oil Pure Treatment Oil for medium to thick hair are perfect. Both products deeply nourish the hair, banish frizz and protect colour. Hair is guarded against UV rays and heat styling.
